Local Greens is following Growing Communities model to set up our local veg bag scheme. We are indebted to Growing Communities and all the individuals involved for their support, mentoring and enthusiasm.
Growing Communities is a community-led organisation based inHackney, North London, which is providing a real alternative to the current damaging food system.
Over the past 10 years or so, they have created two main community-led trading outlets:
an organic fruit and vegetable box scheme
the Stoke Newington Farmers' Market.
These harness the collective buying power of our community and direct it towards those farmers who are producing food in a sustainable way - allowing those small-scale farmers and producers whom we believe are the basis of a sustainable agriculture system to thrive.
Growing Communities believes that if we are to create the sustainable re-localised food systems that will see us through the challenges ahead, we all need to work together with communities and farmers to take our food backfrom the supermarkets and agribusiness.
They are currently working with a number of groups interested in joining our Start-Up Programme this year in order to set up new community-led organic box schemes across the UK based on the Growing Communities' model.
"We know there are lots of communities and individuals all over the UK who understand that we need to act now to create the local food initiatives that are going make our food system more sustainable and resilient in the face of the challenges of climate change and resource depletion" said J ulie Brown, Growing Communities' director.
Growing Communities has been developing the materials, training and web-tools with which to help other groups set up community-led box schemes over the last year.
Go to the Start-Up website if you are interested in joining next year or finding out more about the programme in general, which has received funds from theUnLtd Millenium Awards Scheme.
